“Every girl needs a guy best friend To help her laugh when she thinks she’ll never smile again.” -Anonymous-
The Angelic Harbinger Xaria Veronica Linette The Modern Day God William Blake Mason The Heart of Their Friendship
Some people say a man and a woman cannot be best friends. I wonder who started that?
Whoever said men and women can’t be best friends is dead wrong. One of the greatest gifts in my life has been the seven-year friendship of me and Xaria.
We’ve always been there for each other. There’s really no one better suited to be my best friend than Monsieur William.
Sounds cliché, but I’d take a bullet for her. Not a cliché. I wouldn’t hesitate to place her life over my own.
He’s always believed in me, even when I was far into the darkness. I trust him with my life.
Had my moments when I wasn’t one hundred percent confident. Xaria believing in me makes it easier to believe in myself.
“Notre lien profond.” December 5th, 2021 11:00am PST
In her deep brown eyes, the world sparkled.
Pénélope Linette was a growing girl. Six years old and she was finally tall enough to go on the big kids’ rides. Just standing outside of the family car, the silver 2020 Audi Q7 SUV, she gazed upon the Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier with the biggest smile on her face. She’s been waiting for this day for a long time.
Behind her, her older twin brothers Christian and Jacques Linette exited the vehicle. To the surprise of no one, they wore Marvel shirts; Christian’s was Captain America; Jacques’ was Iron-Man. They moved to each side of her and gently took her hands. She always had to watch them on the big kids’ rides, but today? She was going to be with them.
“Mommy, I wanna ride the rollercoaster!” Penny giggled with glee and looked back.
Xaria Linette smiled softly. “We will in a little bit, sweetie.” She turned towards William Mason and his daughter with a smile. “Are you two ready?”
“Born ready.” Blake didn’t skip a beat with his answer. He looked down at his ten-year-old daughter, Kayla Mason. “Right Kay?”
Kayla happily nodded. “Right.”
William and his daughter fist-bumped. Xaria chuckled softly and made her way over to her children. Penny was ready to make a beeline towards the park, but Christian and Jacques kept her where she was.
“Safety first,” Christian insisted. The bangs of his brown hair moved with the shaking of his head. “You need to stay with Mom or Will.”
“Awww, but I’m a big girl now!” Penny let out a cute pout. She glanced back at William and attempted to give him her (in)famous puppy eyes. “Right, Godpapa?”
William couldn’t help but smile. “Damn right you are.”
Naturally, Xaria gave her best friend a peculiar look. She watched her daughter pull away from her older brothers -- only to move herself to stand on William’s other side and take his hand. At this, Xaria chuckled softly. “It appears our girls are drawn to you.”
William looked at Xaria and lightly shrugged. A light chuckle escaped his lips. Kayla was a bundle of excitement; she couldn’t wait to have fun.
Penny bounced with absolute excitement and her eyes looked back towards the park. “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!”
“Alright,” Xaria smiled. Reaching out, her sons took her hands; Christian on her left and Jacques on her right. “Let’s go.”
They made their way towards one of the ticket booths. Xaria presented the online receipt for the purchase of six unlimited wristbands. After the ticket vendor gave them their respective wristbands, one being for Penny since she was the only one under eight years old, the adults helped the children with them. Before Xaria could put hers on, William insisted on doing it for her. She smiled and decided to return the favor.
Penny’s eyes were on the operating West Coaster. The park had just opened and even though it was a nice day, there weren’t a lot of people here. Fewer people, shorter lines! She was incredibly eager, looking up to her Godfather. “Can we go on that one first?”
William looked over to Xaria. “Your call, Angel,” he said with a smile.
Xaria’s eyes look up to the rollercoaster. She took note of the speed, the velocity, and the design of the track. She then met Penny’s eyes. “Are you sure you’re ready for this?”
Jacques decided to answer for his little sister. “She’s ready, Mom! Besides, we’re all going to be with her.”
Penny was happy with his answer. “Yeah, Mommy! I’m ready!”
“Well, in that case…” Xaria looked up to William and smiled. “Let’s give it a try.” Then she looked at his daughter. “What do you say, Kayla?”
Kayla looked up at her father. William approvingly nodded. With a smile, Kayla looks back at Xaria. She smiles “I’m all in!”
“Let’s conquer this ride, shall we?” William asked.
“Oui,” Xaria smiled.
“Yeah!” Christian and Jacques exclaimed and made their way to the line. Their mother wasn’t too far behind them.
Penny bounced. “C’mon, Godpapa!” Cutely, she attempted to pull him along. She was even receiving help from Kayla!
A smile formed on William’s face as they made their way to the ride. He was looking forward to this day for a very long time. Him, Kayla, Xaria, Penny, Jaques, and Christian felt like a real family affair, something that comforted him.
Once they were in line -- near the very front, as a matter of fact, Xaria looked back over at William and smiled. This was the first time they were spending time together with their children. A kids’ playdate. It was sweet and delightful. She watched their daughters bounce around him with cheerful giggles. Looking forward, she watched her sons move into the section of the line where they would be in the front row of the rollercoaster.
Penny blinked when the line split into four smaller lines. She glanced up at the adults. “Which one should we go in?”
“Hmmm…” Xaria contemplated aloud. “This is going to be your first time on the West Coaster. Let’s have you sit in the third or fifth rows.”
“Pick the third row behind us, sis!” Christian glanced over with a bright smile.
“Okay!” Penny smiled and moved into that line with her godfather.
William bent down to make it easier to look Kayla in the eye. “Kay, you’re going to sit with Xaria on this ride. Okay?”
He gestured to Xaria. Kayla looked up at the Harbinger, who offered her a gentle smile. A grin formed on her face. She turned back to meet her father’s gaze. “Next time?”
William nodded. “Next time.”
He looked at Penny. “You’re with me. That work for you?”
“Yeah!” Penny bounced up and down.
She watched her mother and Kayla move to the back row line. The even-numbered rows were closed off due to the COVID-19 safety protocol. It was completely understandable. As the riders were rotated, it was soon their turn and she was excited to climb into the third row and take her seat on the right side. Her godfather joined her on the left, while her older brothers were settled in on the front row. Glancing back, she watched her mother and Kayla get into the back row.
One of the ride attendants helped them with lowering the lap bar while she looked up at her chaperone. “I’m a little nervous. This is my first big kid ride.”
"It's okay to be nervous," William didn't hesitate to say. "Focus on embracing this moment. Trust me, this is going to be a blast." He concluded with a knowing smile.
Penny’s eyes brightened with his answer. After a minute, everyone was settled in their respective carts with their lap bars down.
William looked at Penny. He gave her a reassuring nod. She smiled back. The West Coaster began to move. The carts slowly made their ascent to the top. Inching closer, William made sure to hold Penny’s hand as confirmation to let her know that everything was going to be alright. Once the carts were at the top, they made their first big drop and Penny let out a squeal of pure excitement.
“WHEEEEEEEEEEEE!” The coaster moved straight only to hook right and stayed on the incline at a steady speed before leveling straight. A double helix followed with a left incline before the coaster straightened out. Christian and Jacques’ hands were up in the air. Xaria and Kayla were enjoying themselves from the back row. William and Penny were hanging on for the ride. Another double helix before the coaster slowed down and returned to the beginning.
Lightly bouncing in her seat, Penny was over the moon about conquering her first-ever big kids’ ride. “That was cool! Let’s go again!”
Jacques glanced back towards his little sister and laughed. “I knew you’d be fine!”
Xaria looked towards them with a soft chuckle. “Let’s go on some more rides first, oui?”
The ride attendants were helping everyone with the lap bars to continue the rotation.
William looked over to Kayla. “Enjoy yourself, Kay?”
Kayla couldn’t contain her excitement. She gave her father a thumbs up. “Can we go another round?”
“I agree with Xaria, there are other rides here to enjoy. Let’s see what else this park has to offer. We can come back.” William answered, assuring his daughter this wouldn’t be the only time they ride the West Coaster.
They chose a perfect day to come here. Sunny with clear skies. All of the rides were in operation and they would go on every single one. Of course, after riding the West Coaster, the little kids’ rides such as Inkie’s Wave Jumper, Inkie’s Air Lift, the Sea Planes, and Frog Hopper were easy peasy in comparison. They only boarded those rides once. Sig Alert EV and Shark Frenzy were especially popular with the children. Christian, Jacques, and Penny were limited to the little cars of the former ride, but they had fun regardless. Kayla loved the latter ride; it was based around the original Tilt-a-Whirl with a modern upgrade and design. Naturally, the dizzying effect took William and Xaria off guard.
The Seaside Swing was a more leisurely ride and they enjoyed it. They conquered the Pacific Plunge too. Now the Sea Dragon was actually pretty scary. Penny was willing to try it, but the 180-degree angle of its movements and the force were a little too much for her. It took her a few minutes to recuperate and they were more than willing to give her the time. William called her brave for trying it at least once. Xaria believed she’d be able to handle it better when she’s a little older.
Once Christian, Jacques, and Kayla got in line for Inkie’s Scrambler, Penny was more than eager to follow them. The adults weren’t too far behind. Seating three people per car, Christian and Jacques kept their little sister company on one. Xaria, William, and Kayla were together on another. It was far more enjoyable for all six of them. The Pacific Wheel was a favorite for everyone. The panoramic view of the Southern California coastline was a delight to simply take in. While Christian tried to find the estate in Malibu, Kayla was looking for the house in Los Angeles. They were hard to see, but they could imagine. With the twelfth and final ride on their checklist, they were able to go back to the West Coaster. It was the ride Penny revisited the most. She was even brave enough to go in the front row with her mother -- and she loved it even more.
They collectively agreed on the indulgence of food and drinks. They ordered from Beach Burgers and Pacific Wheel Pizza Company. For dessert, Scoops Ice Cream & Treats. Of course, they needed to give themselves some time to digest before going on any of the rides. Their return to the SUV allowed them to change footwear, opting for sandals and flip-flops to simply walk along the Santa Monica Beach.
While the kids talked amongst themselves, Xaria leaned up towards William and spoke softly. “Merci,” she smiled.
William wrapped his arm around Xaria. With a smile, he said, “Today has been magical.”
“So far,” she giggled softly. “The park closes tonight at eight, but since it is a school night, I figure we’ll go after we watch the sun go down.”
She wrapped an arm around him in return. “I’m glad Penny has another girl to play with. Kayla is a sweetie.”
“Kayla is the best thing to ever happen to me. I try to be the best man I can be for her. Want her to be proud to have me as a father.” He says as he watches Kayla have a good time interacting with Xaria’s kids.
She smiled sweetly and affirmed for him. “I know she’s proud to have you as her father.”
William returned his focus to Xaria. Nodding, he says, “Thank you.”
“De rien, monsieur. You’re welcome.” She gave him a gentle squeeze.
“Notre volonté.” In the Air December 10th, 2021 6:00pm PST William Mason and Xaria Linette are sitting side by side on his private jet. It hums ever-so-softly in the background. William is sitting close to the window. Xaria is seated next to the aisle. Both of them are dressed professionally. He is looking down at the small remote control in his hand. He looks at Xaria to confirm that she is ready to speak her mind to the world. She offers him a smile and a firm nod. He pushes the button and the light on the camera flashes red. It’s filming time.
[REC] “The phrase ‘first time ever’' is tossed out there more times than I can count. Sometimes the phrase has meaning. Sometimes it doesn’t. As we head into Victory VI: Pick Up Sticks…”
Xaria can’t help but giggle softly. “That’s a silly name, oui?”
“Oui,” William chuckles before he continues.
“This is one ‘first time ever’ that means more to me than I can properly articulate. Xaria and I have been best friends for seven years.” William pauses, soaking in that impressive length of time. “At last, the two of us are working together as a tag team. Logical reason for that. We’ve never been employed by the same company at the same time. Our individual journeys took us down different paths. I always dreamt of this moment. I asked myself…
What if The Modern Day God and The Angelic Harbinger put their heads together?
Could anyone handle what we bring to the table?
Thanks to Xaria inspiring me to make Pro Wrestling Excellence my home, we are about to find out what happens when two best friends team together for the first time ever to face two women who... let’s face it--” William raises an eyebrow. “Besty. Kayla. You two are destined to implode. It isn’t lost on me if you two manage to hold it together long enough, your combined talent is enough to pull off what some pundits would consider an upset.”
“Hello, Kay--” William waves cheekily at the camera. “Sorry. Still odd facing someone who has the same name as my own daughter. For simplicity's sake, I’ll call you Richards.” A sly grin forms on his face.
“The day our tag-team soiree was announced, you called me your number one on Twitter. Normally, that would brighten up my heart. If I’m not number one in anyone's heart, then I’m doing something wrong, right?” William winks. “Unfortunately, being your number one in this instance reminds me of our first encounter. My boys still remember you going low. I’m all for doing whatever it takes to win a match, Richards, but if you wanted to cop-a-feel, all you had to do was ask nicely. My wife wouldn’t like that at all, but it would have been at least lady-like for you to ask…
Who are we kidding? If you handled your business like a lady, you wouldn’t be you. This time, I will wear a cup. Gotta protect the merchandise.”
At that moment, Xaria has quite the giggle fit. “Monsieur William, I’m sure there are children who will be seeing this.”
His longtime companion saying that draws a chuckle from William. “I couldn’t resist.”
He cracks a smile. “Regardless of how many shots you take, a part of me digs your style, Richards. Except--” William holds up the same finger he did before. “-- you called my best friend a loser on Twitter. That's where I draw the line. Take your cheap shots at me. I’m used to it. Belittle someone I care about? Then I’ll have to smack you around for bad behavior. Best friends stand by each other, no matter what. If there is anyone on the planet I feel one thousand percent comfortable to battle in the trenches with, it is the Angelic Harbinger, herself.”
“Richards, since I’m your number one, it’s only fair that you become mine... My first win in Pro Wrestling Excellence.”
Xaria’s ruby red lips curl up into a smile. “Speaking of first wins…” She crosses one leg over the other. “...it was on the fifth Victory that I was finally triumphant -- in a triple threat match, no less. It’s the kind of match that demands ring awareness. Eyes in the back of your head. Angel and TJ Alexander fought hard, but I was far more determined.
Was there doubt…?
Oui.”
She openly confesses this. A weak yet warm smile crosses her face.
“Everyone saw how vulnerable I was. I was mentally wounded. I was emotionally compromised. Mademoiselle Richards, you believe that this bout of depression is weakness. On the contrary, it is a sign of strength. I’m not afraid of showing the world who I am and how I feel. Even in the face of danger, I have always been honest and true. Yes, that includes my alliance with the Children of Nephilim.
You…?
You claim to be a bitch, but are you really?”
A chuckle escapes her. “Sure, you’ve done some pretty… unsavory things. But how much of that reflects you? Are you genuinely a heartless woman? Irredeemable? Past the point of no return? Or are you, in fact, wearing a mask to cover up what’s really inside of you? Everyone has their flaws and imperfections. You are no exception to the rule. Just as there is darkness in everyone? There is also light in every soul.
I wonder, I wonder… When will we see the real Kayla Richards?” A smirk crosses Xaria’s face as she folds her hands on her lap. “Your heart will speak for you one day.”
William looks at Xaria and nods. He shifts his attention back to the camera and speaks up.
“Betsy, it must be tough teaming with a woman you can’t stand. These ‘Strange Bedfellow’ situations aren’t ideal. Wish our first time ever encounter was under different circumstances. It’s the cycle of life, I guess.” William shrugs. “Part of me feels sorry for the predicament that management has put you in, but I won’t lose sleep over it. In case you missed it, my run in PWE hasn’t been the great almighty comeback story I imagined. From being the last person eliminated in a battle royal, to your tag team partner for one night hitting me below the belt, losing a ladder match to crown the inaugural Impulse Champion…
Oh, we can’t forget about being taken out before I could compete for the championship again...”
William scoffs. Xaria scowls.
He shakes his head and continues. “...feeling sorry for your predicament is the last thing I can afford. Next time, we’ll do this properly. For now, Xaria and I are taking this. There are no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it.”
“It is as mon meilleur ami has said…”
Uncrossing her legs, Xaria leans back in her seat and folds her hands behind her head. “This is not an ideal situation for you, Mademoiselle Granger. Of course, it’s not impossible. My first World Tag-Team Championship reign was with Alexis Sykes, a vile, remorseless woman who was not fond of me. We were eWo World Tag-Team Champions for ninety-one days in 2007. Somehow, we made it work. Perhaps you and Mademoiselle Richards will be able to do the same…?
Non. Nous devrions être honnêtes.
Your journey of revenge against your ‘tag-team partner’ is far too powerful to suppress. You don’t trust one another. Not that I blame you, but that, in itself, is difficult to overcome. There is no communication between the two of you.
Monsieur William and I have an unbreakable bond. We have always supported one another. I am the mentor of his younger brother, Victor Mason. He is the godfather of my children, Christian, Jacques, and Pénélope.
A team of best friends.
A team of mortal enemies.
You don’t need rocket science to figure it out.”
Her lips curl into a knowing little smile. Then slowly… it becomes a frown. She looks over at William and lowers her hands at her sides. “It would be rude of us not to express our thoughts on the mysterious assailant, oui?”
“Of course.” William folds his arms into his chest. He glares directly into the camera. “To whoever attacked us, don’t think we forgot. The hunt is still on. This doesn’t end until we teach you a very valuable lesson. Screwing with the people I care about is the last mistake you’ll ever make. It wasn’t great you cost me a shot to compete for the Impulse Championship, but I care more about what you did to Xaria. Her well-being matters more to me than any championship. I’ll never get what you did to her out of my head. Hope you’re listening, you son of a bitch. When we find you, we’re going to make you wish you stayed in the shadows.”
Xaria’s frown never fades. “We’ve been in this industry for many years. Cowardly attacks are a part of the business. The suspect list is always changing. Now it’s come to my attention that one of you is a little more… defensive than the others.
…Mademoiselle Zoey Madigan-Star.”
Saying her name narrows Xaria’s emerald eyes. Her eyebrows furrow, her nose wrinkles, and she even growls. “They say when someone is accused of a crime and they’re angry, they’re more likely to be guilty.
You are completely beside yourself with rage.
If you were truly innocent? You would be calm, assertive, and by your good nature, willing to help us find the true culprit. We’ve heard nothing of the sort. Instead, you throw down the gauntlet and declare a battle with me. You called it… Boardwalk style. Style de promenade. Well then, allow me to retort.
Défi accepté, salope.
Challenge accepted, bitch.”
“Language.” William tuts.
Xaria playfully elbows him. “Desolé!”
“There’s only one thing left to say.” William rests his hands on his knees. “To everyone who has taken the time out of their day to bask in our collective greatness, I’ve got three words for you.
Thanks for coming.”
William winks. Xaria hands him the remote. He presses the button, and just like that, the screen fades to black.
